MSM for Skin – Acne, Rosacea + Aging

How to use MSM supplements for healthy, glowing skin

MSM has many benefits for the skin including increasing collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and fading acne scars.

I’ve been using MSM supplements for more than five years, initially because of its benefits for joint health and digestion but I also noticed that it helped with my eczema.

I definitely notice that my skin isn’t as soft or as clear if I stop taking MSM for more than a week, so I make sure that it’s part of my supplement regime.

In this article I’ll tell you all about this amazing beauty supplement as well as the best ways to use MSM for maximum skin benefits.

What is MSM?

MSM’s full name is methylsulphonylmethane. It’s a natural form of organic sulphur compound that is found in all living organisms and is essential for life and cell regeneration.

The health benefits of MSM include improved joint health, immunity, digestive health, detoxification, healthy hair, strong nails and healthy skin.

MSM for Skin

The benefits of MSM for the skin are wide ranging. MSM helps to:

  • Increase collagen production
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Reduce blemishes and acne breakouts
  • Fade acne scars
  • Reduce fine lines, wrinkles and premature aging
  • Tighten and firm the skin
  • Reduce stretch marks
  • Improve eczema, rosacea and psoriasis
  • Reduce dry and cracked skin
  • Maintain healthy, youthful looking skin

How does MSM benefit the skin?

  • Reduces fine lines & wrinkles by boosting collagen and elastin production.
  • Protects against enzymes responsible for collagen breakdown, which means that collagen lasts longer.
  • Reduces pigmentation and cellular damage by boosting the production of glutathione, a key antioxidant in the body
  • Lowers inflammation by reducing the production of cytokines, which promote inflammation
  • Assists in the creation of new cells and repairing damaged cells

MSM for Glowing, Youthful Skin

A recent study has found that MSM regulates the expression of genes responsible for skin health and the prevention of aging.

Supplementing with MSM showed a reduction in fine lines around the eyes and increased skin firmness.

MSM supplementation also produced significant improvements for total wrinkle count, length, severity, and deep line and wrinkle counts.

Among the study group MSM was well tolerated and the researchers concluded that MSM supplementation appears to benefit skin health, primarily by reducing fine lines and wrinkles. [1]

MSM for Rosacea

Researchers have found that using MSM along with silymarin (the active ingredient in the herb Milk Thistle) showed significant benefits for reducing rosacea.

After 20 days treatment there was a significant reduction in skin redness, papules and itching, along with improved skin hydration. [2]

MSM for Detoxification

MSM helps the cells in the body to be more permeable.  This allows waste products and toxins to be moved out of the cells easily so that essential nutrients can move into the cells.

MSM for Healthy Hair & Strong Nails

As well as increasing collagen production, MSM also increases production of keratin, a key structural material for hair and nails.

MSM can help to increase the strength, thickness and overall health of the hair and nails after a few weeks of supplementation.

How to use MSM for Skin

MSM can be used in powder form or capsules. For best results, MSM should be taken alongside vitamin C because both nutrients are needed for collagen production.

MSM cream can also be massaged into the skin and it’s easily absorbed.

Common Questions about MSM for Skin Health

What is the recommended daily dosage of MSM?

500mg to 3000mg daily is the recommended dosage of MSM. [3]

I personally take 2000mg of MSM daily along with 1000mg of Vitamin C.

Everyone’s needs are different so it’s a good idea to see a Nutritionist or Naturopath who can advise you on the correct dosage for your needs.

Is MSM powder better than MSM capsules?

MSM powder is absorbed quickly but it has a very bitter taste! You can try mixing MSM powder with vitamin C powder, acai powder or camu camu powder to disguise the taste.
