MSM has many benefits for the skin including increasing collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and fading acne scars.

I’ve been using MSM supplements for more than five years, initially because of its benefits for joint health and digestion but I also noticed that it helped with my eczema.

I definitely notice that my skin isn’t as soft or as clear if I stop taking MSM for more than a week, so I make sure that it’s part of my supplement regime.

What is MSM?

MSM’s full name is methylsulphonylmethane. It’s a natural form of organic sulphur compound that is found in all living organisms and is essential for life and cell regeneration.

The health benefits of MSM include improved joint health, immunity, digestive health, detoxification, healthy hair, strong nails and healthy skin.

Researchers have found that using MSM along with silymarin (the active ingredient in the herb Milk Thistle) showed significant benefits for reducing rosacea.

MSM helps the cells in the body to be more permeable.  This allows waste products and toxins to be moved out of the cells easily so that essential nutrients can move into the cells.

As well as increasing collagen production, MSM also increases production of keratin, a key structural material for hair and nails.

How to use MSM for Skin

MSM can be used in powder form or capsules. For best results, MSM should be taken alongside vitamin C because both nutrients are needed for collagen production.

What is the recommended daily dosage of MSM?

500mg to 3000mg daily is the recommended dosage of MSM. [3]

I personally take 2000mg of MSM daily along with 1000mg of Vitamin C.

Everyone’s needs are different so it’s a good idea to see a Nutritionist or Naturopath who can advise you on the correct dosage for your needs.

Is MSM powder better than MSM capsules?

MSM powder is absorbed quickly but it has a very bitter taste! You can try mixing MSM powder with vitamin C powder, acai powder or camu camu powder to disguise the taste.

    1. Hi Anita, MSM is found in leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, apples, alfalfa sprouts, raspberries and tea.
