Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal condition among women of childbearing age and it affects 10 percent of American women. [1]

Women with PCOS usually have high testosterone and high insulin levels, along with insulin resistance.

Ovulation is rare with PCOS and follicles (tiny cysts) build up in the ovaries and secrete male hormones into the bloodstream.

Studies on green tea for PCOS

Green tea extract is a popular natural remedy in traditional Chinese medicine and there have been many studies conducted on the benefits of green tea for PCOS, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hormones and weight loss.

A 2015 Iranian study found that supplementation with green tea extract led to a significant reduction in luteinizing hormone, overall body weight and ovarian weight.

A significant reduction in insulin resistance index was also seen in the treatment group.

These results show a marked improvement in PCOS symptoms which may be due to green tea’s effects on oxidative stress in the body.

The researchers concluded that green tea can be considered as a potentially effective natural treatment for PCOS, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. [2]

Another Iranian study conducted in 2017 studied 60 overweight women with PCOS.

The women were randomly divided into two groups with one group receiving the green tea supplement and the other group a placebo supplement.

The women were tested for free testosterone and fasting insulin levels at the beginning of the study and 12 weeks later. 

The researchers found that the consumption of green tea by overweight and obese women suffering from PCOS led to weight loss, decreased fasting insulin and free testosterone levels. [3]

A meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials found that consuming green tea significantly reduced fasting glucose, fasting insulin and hemoglobin A1c (Hb A1c) levels. [4]

Hemoglobin A1c is a test that shows your average blood sugar level over the previous 2 to 3 months. 

Other benefits of green tea for PCOS

Chronic inflammation is common in women with PCOS, so reducing inflammation is essential for overcoming PCOS symptoms.

Green tea contains catechins including epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) that help to reduce inflammation in the body. [5]

Green tea is also helpful for weight loss. Studies have shown that it helps to increase the metabolism and boost fat burning. [6]

Drink green tea

Drinking 2 to 3 cups of green tea a day is a great way to get the health benefits of green tea.

A 2007 study found that lemon juice helps the body absorb up to 13 times more catechins than regular green tea.[7]

Matcha is higher in nutrients than regular green tea so you don’t need to consume as much to get the same benefits.
