Can essential oils really help with stress and anxiety?
I must admit, before I started using essential oils I was skeptical, but I kept hearing about their benefits for stress and anxiety so I decided to give them a try.
Now I have a whole collection of essential oils and I use them all the time.
In this article I’ve put together a list of 7 of the best calming essential oils for relaxation and dealing with stress and anxiety.

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated liquids containing the oils of the plant they were extracted from.
Essential oils have been around since ancient times in various cultures, including Egypt, China, India and Europe.
How are essential oils used?
- A diffuser can be used to spread the oil’s scent around a room
- Place a few drops on your hands, rub them together to warm the oil and cup your hands around your face
- Place a few drops of oil on a tissue or handkerchief and inhale the aroma
- Mix essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil and rub into your skin
- Add a few drops of essential oil to a warm bath
Essential oils for stress and anxiety
Essential oils can help to reduce the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression but they’re not a cure.

Lavender is one of the most well-known calming and relaxing essential oils.

I like to keep lavender essential oil with me so if I’m feeling stressed I can inhale the scent straight from the bottle or rub a couple of drops into my hands.

Chamomile essential oil helps to promote inner peace and decreases irritability, overthinking, anxiety and worry.
Chamomile is also helpful for reducing digestive problems and can be massaged into your belly to reduce abdominal pains.
Frankincense (Boswellia carteri or boswella sacra)
Frankincense essential oil has a calming and tranquil energy that is helpful for depression and anxiety.
Frankincense also helps to deepen meditation and quiet the mind.
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
