Natural supplements for Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)
In this article I’ve compiled a list of 5 natural thyroid supplements that can support your thyroid and reduce stress and fatigue.
Important Note: These supplements can be helpful for hypothyroid symptoms but they’re not a cure for hypothyroidism. Please talk to your doctor about treatment options for hypothyroidism.

If you’ve been diagnosed with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, you’ll know how debilitating these conditions can be.
The thyroid is responsible for regulating body temperature and metabolism, so having an underactive thyroid will slow down your metabolism, making it much harder to lose weight.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism
- Feeling cold all the time
- Hair loss
- Brittle nails
- Dry skin
- Weight gain
What is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis?
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition where antibodies bind to the thyroid and prevent the manufacture of sufficient levels of thyroid hormone.
Hashimoto’s is one of the most common causes of hypothyroidism.
If you’d like to check your thyroid status without needing to see a doctor, you can order a test online from Walk-In Lab.
Then all you need to do is visit a local lab at a time that suits you and your results will be available online within one to two days.
There’s an extensive range of thyroid tests available but the two I recommend are Thyroid #2 Essential Blood Test Panel which includes Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) plus T3 and T4.
Thyroid #4 Comprehensive Blood Test Panel is more in depth and includes
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), T3, T4, Thyroid Antibodies, Reverse T3 plus a few more thyroid markers.
Thyroid Supplements for Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s
Here are 5 of the best thyroid supplements that will help you to overcome the symptoms of hypothyroidism naturally.
Selenium is an essential mineral for the thyroid and is found in Brazil nuts, mushrooms, oats and sesame seeds.
Selenium is required for the conversion of T4 (the inactive form of thyroid hormone) into the active form T3.
Without enough selenium this conversion won’t happen and will result in lower levels of thyroid hormones.
Supplementing with selenium has been shown to reduce thyroid antibodies and an adequate intake of selenium can protect the thyroid against autoimmune conditions.
I like this one because it is easily absorbed and contains 200mcg per capsule.
Zinc is another mineral that is required to convert T4 into T3.
Zinc is found in oysters, meat, nuts, seeds, chicken and beans.
In addition to maintaining adequate levels of thyroid hormones, zinc is essential for a strong immune system and healthy, strong hair.
If you’re looking for a good quality zinc supplement, I recommend this one because it contains zinc picolinate, which is absorbed better than other forms of zinc.
3. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
Ashwagandha also protects the thyroid from the effects of chronic stress and reduces fatigue.
4. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Licorice root can support the thyroid and adrenal glands and is especially beneficial if you have low cortisol levels or adrenal fatigue.
5. Coleus (Coleus forskohlii)
Coleus is a herb that contains a compound called forskolin that naturally increases the production of thyroid hormones.
Be wary of iodine supplements if you have Hashimoto’s
Iodine is highly concentrated within the thyroid gland and adequate iodine levels are important for thyroid hormone production.
Iodine can be beneficial for people suffering from hypothyroidism but only if there are no anti-thyroid antibodies present.
If you’ve been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s or have elevated anti-thyroid antibodies, please check with your doctor or health practitioner before supplementing with iodine as it can worsen Hashimoto’s symptoms.
Here are 2 Thyroid Supplements that I recommend:
Gaia Herbs Thyroid Support helps to support thyroid hormone production, boost energy levels and encourage healthy weight loss.
It contains Ashwagandha, Bladderwrack, Coleus, Kelp and Schisandra.
Zhou Thyroid Support helps with energy, metabolism and focus.
It contains Vitamin B12, Iodine, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, Tyrosine, Schisandra, Ashwagandha, Bladderwrack, Kelp and Cayenne Pepper.
It’s a good idea to discuss any thyroid supplements with your healthcare provider because some supplements and herbs can interact with prescription medications.
I hope these supplements will help you to manage the symptoms of hypothyroidism naturally.
