How to Lose Weight with Healthy Smoothies

Weight loss smoothies can help you to burn fat fast, but it’s important to use the right ingredients that will boost your energy and metabolism and keep you full.

If you’re not careful, it’s easy to overload your smoothie with too many natural sugars, which will derail your weight loss efforts.

In this article I’ve put together a list of the 10 best weight loss smoothie ingredients along with 2 of my favorite, easy to prepare smoothie recipes.

Incorporating smoothies into your diet is beneficial not just for weight loss but also for cleansing and detoxing your body, keeping yourself hydrated and keeping your bowels regular. 

Smoothies are easily digested and the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are readily absorbed so they’re great for anyone suffering from leaky gut or digestive problems.

How do smoothies help with weight loss?

Weight loss smoothies usually contain more vegetables than fruit. This is to keep your blood sugar stable and avoid the sugar rush that leads to sugar cravings a few hours later.

Smoothies are low in calories but if they contain the right balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat and fibre they can keep you full and assist you to lose some extra pounds without feeling hungry.

If you’re just beginning a weight loss program or you’ve been losing weight steadily and then hit a plateau, smoothies can really help with your weight loss goals.

In my naturopathy clinic, my clients achieved good weight loss results when replacing one meal a day (usually breakfast) with a weight loss smoothie.

You can also make double the quantity and have the rest as a snack during the day.

If you don’t have much time in the mornings to make your smoothies, you can chop your fruits and vegetables in advance and put them into the freezer in individual portions. Then all you have to do is add them to the blender along with your powders and liquids and blend.

1. Protein Powder

Protein takes a few hours to be digested, so adding a scoop of protein powder to your smoothie will help to keep you full.

I prefer vegetarian sources of protein powder like pea protein or rice protein but you can also use whey protein, which is made from milk.

It’s important to check the ingredients to make sure that it doesn’t contain artificial sweeteners or flavors.

2. Berries

Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are low in calories and sugar but high in fiber and antioxidants.

Berries add a natural hint of sweetness and help to disguise the taste of greens in your smoothie.

Frozen berries are just as nutritious as fresh berries, so you can use them all year round.

3. Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are packed with nutrients including minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats. They also contain fiber and protein to keep you full.

To make your smoothie extra creamy, you can combine equal parts chia seeds and water in a small container and let it sit for 5 – 10 minutes to form a gel.

4. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin which helps to boost your metabolic rate while also suppressing your appetite.

Cinnamon is a popular spice that helps to improve the metabolism of glucose and regulate blood sugar levels. [1]

6. Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are essential as part of a balanced diet for weight loss so be sure to include a small amount of avocado, coconut oil, nuts or nut butter to your smoothie.

7. Leafy Greens

Greens, like spinach, kale and lettuce are highly alkalizing and packed with phytonutrients. They’re are also high in fiber and low in calories.

8. Matcha

Matcha green tea powder contains catechins such as EGCG, which is a powerful antioxidant and helps with fat burning.

Catechins work together with caffeine to increase thermogenesis, which is the process where the body burns calories to produce heat.[2]

9. Moringa

Moringa is an Indian herb used in Ayervedic medicine that helps with weight loss by improving the breakdown of fat cells.

Moringa is also a good source of calcium, iron, magnesium and vitamin A.

10. Liquids

There are many different liquids you can use for the base of your smoothie including water, coconut water, herbal tea, almond milk or rice milk.

Can I substitute three meals a day for smoothies to lose weight quickly?

I don’t recommend smoothie diets for rapid weight loss. It’s important to have a balanced diet along with your smoothies to maintain steady and lasting fat loss.

Are green smoothies better than fruit smoothies for weight loss?

Green smoothies are generally lower in sugar and calories than smoothies containing fruit so they will help you to lose weight faster.

It’s good to rotate your smoothie ingredients so that you’re getting a wide range of nutrients.

Are smoothies better than juices for weight loss?

Smoothies contain whole fruits and vegetables including the fiber which helps to fill you up.

Juices aren’t suitable as a meal replacement because they don’t contain fiber so you’ll still be hungry afterwards.

Here are 2 of my favourite weight loss smoothie recipes:

Green Detox Weight Loss Smoothie

  • 1 cup of baby spinach leaves
  • 1 teaspoon of chia seeds soaked in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes
  • 1 tablespoon of protein powder
  • ½ cup of blueberries
  • ¼ cup of fruit or veggies eg. cucumber, kiwi fruit, banana etc.
  • 1 cup of water

Banana Berry Weight Loss Smoothie

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 cup of mixed berries
  • 1 cup of baby spinach leaves
  • 1 tablespoon of protein powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon of coconut oil

For both recipes, add spinach and water to the blender and blend until smooth.

Add all the other ingredients and blend until thoroughly combined. Add more water until your preferred consistency is reached.

  4. I appreciate you stating that you need a BALANCED diet in order to achieve weightloss, thus replacing your meals with smoothies is not a great idea. I think smoothies once in a while could be a great addition to your life, but every day or multiple times a day is a bit excessive.
